We hear many depressing stories of studio closures and layoffs, but it’s nice to write about some of the wins. Following a game jam project, developer Ginolabo was hired to create a game within the Fairy Tail IP with support from manga creator Hiro Mashima. Mashima-sensei shared that he invested 10 Million Yen ($68,000 USD) of his own money to fund the project, and I’m happy to report that his trust in the developer and his IP was right on the money.
Since its launch two days ago, the game has sold over 10,000 copies. Now, for a large studio game, this may not sound like a lot, but I’m going to guess that less than ten people had their hands on this project, so we can assume there is a possibility of a profit. Considering the launch discount and this information, the game has made roughly $110,000. In Yen, that’s close to 16 Million, which means we can likely expect to see more indie adventures within the Fairy Tail IP.
Fairy Tail: Dungeons features Natsu and Happy exploring a dungeon that appears behind a door that suddenly appears beneath the guild. Within this locale, their powers are sapped, and they meet an Exceed named Labo, who asks for help in locating their missing friend, Arthur. Natsu and Happy agree to aid the search.
The gameplay has cards in a deck used to attack, defend, cast magic, and more, with new cards obtained from battle and treasure chests. Card utilization in specific orders will unleash Magic Chains that unleash greater damage.
Exploring the solo dungeon may lead to other guild members joining Natsu’s and Happy’s efforts. This trek can continue until the lantern goes out, and falling in battle will enable the points you earned to unlock amulets aiding future runs.
