On August 20, 2024, legendary Japanese voice actress Atsuko Tanaka was confirmed to have passed away following a battle with an illness. Her son announced the tragedy on Twitter.
Atsuko Tanaka is well-known for countless iconic roles throughout anime, perhaps most notably recognized as Motoko Kusanagi from the Ghost in the Shell franchise.
Other roles fans may recognize her from include Caster from Fate/stay night, Harumi Kiyama from A Certain Scientific Railgun, Karulau from Utawarerumono, Mathias from Tales of Innocence, Opera from Star Ocean: Second Evolution, Eleanor from Valkyria Chronicles, Kaine from NieR Replicant, and Lara Croft in several Tomb Raider projects.
