Warner Bros. Games has announced that the Avalanche Software-developed adventure game Hogwarts Legacy has achieved over 22 million sales worldwide. Roughly two million of those sales occurred during the December 2023 holiday season.
Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment president David Haddad shared the following statement regarding the feat via the outlet Variety:
“But it’s not just the unit sold that I’m so proud of, it’s just that it delighted the fans so much. It brought Harry Potter to life in a new way for gamers where they could be themselves in this world, in this story. And that’s what the team at Avalanche set out to do when they were developing the game and I think that’s really why it resonated so well and remains the best-selling game of the year in the entire industry worldwide. That’s a position that typically is held by one of these incumbent’s sequel games and we’re so proud that we’ve been able to break into the top ranks.”
Other notable comments include how many users played through the game multiple times due to the differently sorted Houses, as well as the following statistics:
- 707 Million Hours Played Collectively
- 819 Million Brewed Potions
- 1.3 Billion Magical Plants Harvested
- 593 Million Magical Beasts Rescued
- 4.9 Billion Dark Wizards Defeated
Lastly, regarding upcoming developments, such as the Quidditch sport, which is in beta testing, Haddad said the following:
“We don’t have any particular announcements on exactly how and when [the Quidditch game] is going to come to the market, but we are working to get it designed in a way just to delight fans.”
Hogwarts Legacy is an open-world action RPG where players will experience the Wizarding World during the 1800s. Players will assume the role of a student who holds the key to an ancient secret that threatens the wizarding world.
During gameplay, players can make choices as they develop allies, fight Dark wizards, and attend classes. Much of the game is up to the players and how they approach missions. Further, there are classes to attend and bonds to form, with a great degree of choice in how they choose to interact with other characters.
The title was previously confirmed to have sold over 12 million units worldwide across all platforms, resulting in $850 million earned during its first two weeks of release.
