Developed by Good-Feel, the team behind Kirby’s Epic Yarn and Princess Peach Showtime, Bakeru follows the titular protagonist traveling to 47 Japanese prefectures to free Japan from the oracle Saitaro and festival troopers from trying to take over the country.
The setting, described as “Fairy Tail Japan,” mixed a modern-day interpretation of the region alongside old period dramas, collectively divided across 50 stages.
Bakeru’s gameplay primarily features the main character’s drum, a secret treasure passed down by the Tanuki Clan. Supposedly able to purify evil spirits, this mechanic is guided by a simple and intuitive control scheme.
Further, by obtaining a Henge License, Bakeru can transform into the fairy tale hero who granted it to him. Several Japanese heroes like Kintaro and Momotaro can be transformed into with unique skills and abilities.
The Western release of Bakeru adds new gameplay features, notably the new Hurricane and Spinning Top attacks, as well as the new Lantern Boss.
