The much-anticipated third season of Re:Zero -Starting Life in Another World- is set to premiere in October 2024, thrilling fans who have eagerly awaited the continuation of Subaru’s harrowing journey. During Anime Expo 2024, I had the opportunity to sit down with key members of the production team, including Director Masahiro Shinohara, Character Designer Haruko Sagawa, and Natsuki Subaru’s voice actor, Yusuke Kobayashi, to discuss what’s in store for the upcoming season.
One of the most significant developments for this season is the decision to kick off the series with a 90-minute premiere. Director Shinohara explained that this extended first episode was essential to properly convey the depth of the story and the character developments that have occurred since the last season. “We really wanted to express and include all of the elements of Re:Zero and carry through the story from season two into season three,” he shared. The decision reflects the four-year gap since the last season, ensuring that returning characters are reintroduced with the gravitas and complexity they deserve. This approach not only impacts the pacing of the episode but sets the tone for the entire season, providing a comprehensive reintroduction to the world of Re:Zero.
Character Designer Haruko Sagawa also highlighted the evolution of the character designs for this new season, particularly focusing on the growth of Subaru and Emilia. “For Subaru, now officially a knight of Emilia, we wanted to express his growth and his increased responsibilities through his character design,” Sagawa explained. Subaru’s design now features more lines, symbolizing his maturity and the weight of his new role. Similarly, Emilia’s design has been enhanced to reflect her growing strength and inner beauty, moving away from the more “cutesy” aspects of her earlier portrayals to show her development into a more complex character. The care taken to update these designs underscores the series’ commitment to character development, ensuring that their growth is visually represented as well as narrative.
Yusuke Kobayashi, who voices Subaru, shared insights into how he has prepared for the emotional intensity that the role demands. “I didn’t do any special preparation in particular, but I wanted to carry through the new developments and Subaru’s growth as he officially becomes a knight,” he noted. Kobayashi’s deep connection to the character is evident, especially as he mentioned how he often finds himself channeling Subaru’s intense emotions, particularly when expressing anger.
As fans prepare for the October premiere, they can expect a season filled with emotional depth, intricate storytelling, and stunning visual updates that have made Re:Zero a beloved series worldwide. The 90-minute premiere scheduled for October 2024 promises to be a powerful re-entry into Subaru’s world, setting the stage for what is sure to be an unforgettable season.
